Cardinal Capital is honored to join the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) in receiving the national U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary’s Award for Healthy Homes for its housing project, Highland Commons. The Healthy Homes award recognizes excellence in healthy housing innovation and achievement.

Developed by Cardinal Capital and Milwaukee Center for Independence, and financed by WHEDA, Highland Commons is a 50-unit, supportive living housing project in West Allis, WI that has been serving individuals experiencing severe and persistent mental illness since 2012.

The Healthy Homes award recognizes that with well-lit, bright apartments, commons spaces, and a calming color palette, Highland Commons is designed to reduce stress by addressing the need for privacy, a sense of security and serene surrounding.

The housing project also incorporates a supportive living model of services that allows individuals with a mental illness to live independently in permanent housing that provides them with the services best suited to their individual needs. After two years of being open, reports show marked improvements in the health and well-being of Highland Commons’ residents.
